The term Mind/Body has become mainstream. Yoga made healing and meditation cool and hip. But how many people truly understand the way the mind and body connect? Furthermore, do they know how to use that information to create change and heal?
I discovered holistic health when I was at the lowest point in my life. I had been taking psychiatric medications for seven years and had become a shell of who I had once been. Shell might not be the best description because I had put on 100 pounds and gone from a size 6 to an 18.
My skin was full of acne and I had daily migraines and stomach aches that are hard to describe. I struggled with horrible night sweats and suicidal thoughts. To put it bluntly, my body and mind were a mess and I was completely at a loss as to where to begin.
My saving grace was when I Googled, “how to heal naturally from mental illness.” To my surprise, Google answered with tips on meditation, self-hypnosis and hypnotherapy. I hired a Life Coach who began to challenge my mindset and beliefs. She also helped me understand how my food sensitivities were affecting my body and mind.
I began to tune into my body daily which was brand new and completely foreign for me. Being raised in a strict Catholic home, modesty was very important and we did not talk about our bodies. Thankfully, that has all changed now that we all know better.
As I grew to understand my body and how my thoughts were affecting it, something amazing happened. My body began to transform and I healed faster than I had every imagined. When I changed my negative thoughts to positive affirmations, my skin started to glow and the weight fell off faster than it arrived.
All my pain turned into a new sense of purpose and I was filled with a new passion for life. I was so on fire for the transformation I was experiencing, I decided to enroll at The Southwest Institute of Healing Arts, or SWIHA, to receive my degree in Mind/Body Transformational Psychology. As part of my degree, I also received certifications in Hypnotherapy, Life Coaching and Polarity Therapy.
By the time I graduated as a Holistic Health Practitioner, I was back to my ideal weight, had released all my medications and back to balance and bliss. Now, I am passionate about helping others understand the power their thoughts have over their own body. Each person has a healer locked inside of them. All they have to do is learn how to tap into the healer within and their mind and body will reset and return to balance.

There were two books that got me started on my healing journey and helped me understand the mind/body connection in deeper ways.
“The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” by Joseph Murphy.
I learned everything I know about self-hypnosis and how to heal using my subconscious mind from Murphy’s book. He healed himself of a brain tumor using the techniques he shares in this book.
The techniques he shares transformed my body and mind in just a few weeks. My copy of his book is well worn. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to use visualization and positive thinking to heal.
This book helps you understand the metaphysical causes for physical symptoms you are experiencing and is a staple in both my personal and professional life.
After struggling with vaginal cancer, Hay decided to heal herself using positive thoughts. She also worked with clients for years and recorded the way their thoughts changed their body. This book is a product of that research and it is amazing.
Hay provides you with the thoughts, beliefs or behaviors that brought the illness to your body as well as tools and affirmations to break free. I do not recommend buying this book on your Kindle or in digital format. This is small flip book that you want to be able to open and reference with ease.
You can find this mini book inside of Hay’s book, “You Can Heal Your Life”. This book is great if you feel you need to heal from childhood wounds. Louise left home while still a teenager to escape the sexual abuse of her mother’s boyfriends. The book is a self help guidebook on forgiving and letting go.
I also used Hay’s card deck of positive affirmations, Power Thought Cards, daily to stay upbeat and focused. They are beautiful to look at and have great messages.
If you are more of a TV buff, the documentaries that helped me change my mindset are listed below.
Watch the trailer of You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie, Hay House's film on the life and work of founder, Louise L. Hay. Her story is amazing and will inspire you to make change.
This documentary shows you the science behind the mind/body connection and what is happening in our brains and bodies as we think positive and negative thoughts. Following a woman struggling with depression through a fictitious day, you are able to watch through an entirely new perspective. This amazing documentary also introduced me to Dr. Emoto’s work. Let’s save him for another blog!
So, how hungry are you to heal? I wanted change so much I went out and bought every book recommended and watched or listened to as much as I could. Start by making one step towards understanding the way your thoughts affect your body. Each day, add one more new step or tool. Your body and mind will be flowing with bliss before you know it.
